Back in the summer of 2021, a friend showed us around the gardens of a house outside Deal. The grounds are magnificent but had not been maintained for some years. The site included a vast wooden greenhouse and a separate hot house, planted with nectarines and apricots.
In a giddy state, we wandered up an avenue of fifty apple and pear trees; pushed open a wooden door into a walled garden head-high with thistles and nettles.
